I like to go out to eat alone. I remember reading in one of SARK's books that people, (women especially) should experience more life on their own. Spending time alone has never been hard for me, I am always comfortable in my own presence, but I hadn't intentionally gone out and sat at a restaurant by myself... on purpose.
Since making a conscious effort to do more of this, I have made some interesting observations.
Whenever I walk in, the host automatically assumes I am there for take-out. They sometimes even walk up to me with a menu and put it in my hands.
When I tell them I'd like to be seated, they usually say, "Just one?" That word "just" kills me... One! Proudly asking for a table for one, please.
The waitress is always intensely friendly. Maybe she feels bad for me?
I usually get a free appetizer or drink or something. Maybe they think I'm a food critic?
Anyway. I know I am very lucky to have so much time to myself. I live alone, I am single, I don't have any children. If you have the time to get away and sit at a table alone with a glass of wine and a nice meal, treat yourself to a table for one.
huh, now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever ate at a restaurant alone...other than at airports, I mean. Maybe I should change that.
ReplyDeleteI have actually done this a few times before and enjoy it quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteI've never done this...and I'm pretty sure I'd feel so awkward I'd never make it thru!
ReplyDeleteI'm always in the cinema on my own, and usually eat lunch on my own, but rarely eat dinner out...maybe i should treay myself! I think the trick is to make sure you get a seat looking out of the window, so you're never bored :)
ReplyDeleteAmen sister! I lovvve dining out alone. I discovered the joys of solo dining in high school when I would skip class, and have never looked back. I had a girlfriend once tell me that she would NEVER consider getting dinner alone, and I think that's sort of sad. You savor your meal so much more, it's so soothing and I always feel sort of powerful afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI live with my boyfriend, but every so often when he is out I will still go out to dinner by myself. I wish all women would give it a chance!

What a great idea! I've never done this before, but after reading this post I think I just might...
ReplyDeleteOMG yes, doing stuff on your own is great. I worked out that I spend most of my non working time alone, sometimes doing stuff, sometimes not. Its great.
ReplyDeleteI have always been intensely independent. I think I always will be. I will admit to always being a bit nervous when I go somewhere alone (working on the whole "self-confidence" thing) but with a book or not I always enjoy the experience once I leave.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely something more women (or anyone for that matter) should make time to do :)
